Possible Role of 5-Hydroxytryptamine in the Development of Arrhythmia

Abstract

|
Employing the electrocardiograms of the rabbit and rat, it was found that 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) could produce sinus slowing or ectopic beats and potentiated the same effects induced by epinephrine. The effect of the vagal stimulation was increased by treating the animals with 5-hydroxytryptophan or giving 5-HT. The sinus slowing by 5-HT was little affected by the ligation of the common carotid artery, while the bilateral vagotomy, vagolytic substances, procaine hydrochloride and promethazine affected the sinus slowing to abolish or diminish it. it was discussed about the mechanisms of 5-HT-sinus slowing and its possibilities to participate in the development of cardiac arrhythmia.
